In 1533, Jean de Pontac (1488-1589) bought the title to the domain of Haut-Brion, giving birth to a wine estate whose illustrious heritage would be preserved and promoted over the centuries by four families. In December 1749, at the death of his father Louis, Joseph de Fumel (1720-1794) inherited Château Haut-Brion. Joseph carried on the work begun by his predecessors, increasing the renown of his wines in foreign lands. In february 28, 1801, Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, prince de Bénévent, purchased Haut-Brion from Jacques Pons, Marie Joseph and Laure de Fumel, the heirs of comte Joseph de Fumel. In 1836, following the difficult times faced by Jean-Henry Beyerman's widow, Joseph Eugène Larrieu (1777-1859) acquired the property at auction. Clarence Dillon (1882-1979) was an American financier and lover of France. The purchase would be concluded on May 13, 1935.
