Directions

Planting Directions: When to Plant: Best results are obtained when seeding in the early spring or fall, when daily temperatures are before 60 F and 80 F. Spring Planting: Plant in the early spring because this allows time for the seed to grow and establish before facing the hot, dry conditions of summer. Tip: Freezing temperatures will not harm the seed and will only delay emergence. Do not apply a pre-emergent product, such as crabgrass preventer, at time of planting . Pre-emergent products inhibit new roots from forming and will stunt seed growth. Wait at least 30 days after seed establishment before applying such a product. Fall Planting: Plant in the late summer or early fall. This allows ample time for the seed to grow and establish before facing winter conditions. Tip: Fall is a great time for planting, because the warm days and cool nights promote rapid growth and there is less competition from weeds. Preparing Planting Area: New Lawns: Remove all debris from planting area and rake or till to loosen the top 2 to 3 inches of soil. Level area and grade to drain away from buildings. Established Lawns: To thicken and existing lawn, mow your grass as short as possible, rake thoroughly to remove any debris or dead grass and expose the soil. Bare Spots: Rake to loosen the top 1/4 inch of soil. Fertilizing: Apply a starter fertilizer at the recommended rate. This ensures the soil has the right proportion of nutrients that new grass plants need to become an established, healthy lawn. Planting: Sow evenly over the planting area at the recommended rate. For new lawns and for treating bare spots, gently rake seed into soil. Spreader Settings: Scotts Speedy Green: 12 established lawns; 14 new lawns. Scots EdgeGuard (Rotary): 12 established lawns; 14 new lawns. Scotts AccuGreen (Drop): 13 established lawns; 18 new lawns. Watering: Keep soil moist by lightly watering two to three times daily until seed germination is complete (2 to 4 weeks). Continue to water until the lawn has reached establishment, then water as needed. Tip: A typical established lawn requires between 1/2 and 1 inch of water each week. Seeding Rates: New Lawn: 3 lb per 650 sq ft. Existing or Overseeding Lawn: 3 lb per 1,300 sq ft. Bare Spot: 1/4 cup per 2 feet x 2 feet area. Care & Maintenance: Mowing: Maintain a regular mowing schedule and cut when plants are approximately 3 inches. Feeding: Regular feedings are critical to turf health and vigor. Apply a follow-up feeding of turf fertilizer 4 to 6 weeks after establishment. Tip: For best results, follow an annual lawn care program that is right for your area. Weed Control: Do not apply a weed control product until seed has germinated and is established (after the third or fourth mowing). Tip: Weeds steal valuable nutrients and water from grass. By practicing good mowing habits and following a regular fertilizing schedule, you significantly reduce weed competition and have a healthier, better looking lawn.
